01 Sep Womens 9s GF Runners Up
A mighty effort and a mighty journey for Womens 9th Grade. They are the 2019 runners up.
The first day of spring, warmth was in the air for the Sydney North’s Womens Hockey Association Grand Finals. Sydney Uni Hockey Club’s 9th Grade womens were prepped and ready to take on Northern District Strikers. Just 2 weeks prior in the semi final these two teams faced off to a disappointing draw in extra time after drop offs leading to our girls having to play again.
Starting off strong saw the ball in our attacking half for most of the first and second quarter. Carmen Dinh scored a goal to put Sydney Uni in the lead. Maintaining that lead for most of the third quarter lead to some complacency and Northern Districts scored off a short corner to equalise at the end of the quarter. Another short corner conversion put us on the back foot at the end of the fourth quarter, captain Simone Young thought she’d scored an equaliser in the final 90seconds that was disallowed. Ending a very well matched grand final where our girls played a great game of hockey.
This team has been (mostly) together since 2014 and is a true rags to riches story. Going through years of losses slowly building to this great effort. Shout out to Ed Clancy who has stuck it out for 4 seasons with the girls and his coaching and dedication has reflected in the girls improvement.
The team includes:
Claudia Hall, Simone Young, Maddie Perkins, Harriet Watson, Hilary Cairns, Kate Barrow, Sonja Henning-Smith, Elle Tsai, Deirdre Sargent, Caroline Ashley, Carmen Dinh, Helen Douglas, Honoree Lain, Hannah Sidorko, Liv Aiken, Alysha Prakash
