It is my great honour to announce that Anne Simmons and Rowan Johnston were presented with life membership with Sydney Uni Hockey Club at the 2021 AGM. It is difficult to summarise the enormity of their contribution however the following briefly exemplifies the extensive and invaluable contribution Anne and Rowan have made to the club.
Uniquely, Rowan and Anne have never played a hockey match for Sydney University. They became involved through their sons as juniors and then seniors with the club. Since the early 2000’s, Anne and Rowan have performed in various committee positions which vastly improved the club’s position for the future. They have been key stakeholders in improving the club’s financials to a position of strength since early 2000s., More recently Anne and Rowan have been driving forces behind the massive fundraising projects for the home of hockey appeal and the development of the Bruce Pryor Turf.
To many of our club members, the roles have been behind the scenes however extremely valuable and instrumental in the operations and viability of the club. Those who have worked on the committee with Anne and Rowan will understand the value that they have brought our club.
Edwina Paul observed: “the club, both in its current structure and level of success, would not be where it is without Anne and Rowan’s selfless and tireless commitment. They are the embodiment of everything wonderful about SUHC and, whether they realise it or not, the club and all its members are indebted to both of them.”
To be awarded life membership is a very rare occurrence and even rarer for two people who have never stepped foot on the hockey pitch. Both Anne and Rowan have had highly successful professional careers and have also received University Golds for their contributions to the club. However, seeing the emotion and surprise on their faces when we announced this award was clear evidence of the passion and dedication they have for the club.
