Students of Sydney University are eligible to represent Sydney University at the annual Australian University Games (AUG). AUG are held around August each year.
The men won Gold at AUG in 2011 for the first time in 50 years, while the Women won for the 6th time in 10 years. The 2011 results were SU's best results in hockey at AUG for many years and were part of the reason that SU was the overall winner at AUG in 2011 for the first time for many years. In 2012 the Women won gold and the men won silver. In 2013 we missed the finals on goal differences after poor first days, but in 2014 , when the games were in Sydney, we got to the finals again.
Men and Women from Sydney University are frequently fortunate enough to be selected in the Green and Gold teams, which are the Australian "All Universities" teams.

Smokey the Gnome travels to all Intervarsity or Australian University Games with our teams. We do not know when he first started accompanying them, but he is in the Men's IV team photos as early as 1928, so he has been there for almost our entire history. There is a report on him here.
