Latest Club News and Information...

Sydney Uni Juniors Overview

The junior division of Sydney University Hockey Club was formed in 2001 when the North Sydney Juniors became part of the Sydney University Hockey Club. Our North Sydney Junior heritage goes back to the early 1970s. The senior club started in 1906, and is the only surviving club that was involved with NSW's first men's and women's cometitions in 1907 and 1909 respectively. See our History page for more on our proud history.

From the outset our teams have played in the North Area Junior  Hockey competiton, which includes the clubs in the north and north west of Sydney. This did not change when we joined North West Sydney Hockey Association as part of the 2015 restructure of club hockey in Sydney.  We enter teams in the U11, U13, U15 and U17 age groups. These teams were all mixed teams.

In 2017 we will again field teams in the North Area junior competition.

Our boys can also play in the men's grade teams once they turn 15, and girls in the women's grade teams. We also enter a large number of teams in various Indoor Hockey competitions in Spring and Summer.

The junior games are usually on Friday evenings from 6.30pm or on Saturday mornings from 8.30am. Most teams have an even mixture of Friday night and Saturday morning games. The games are played at all the turf fields in the North Area - Ryde, Cintra (Concord), Pennant Hills and Gordon - and, from 2017, our own turf al Cumberland College, Lidcombe. A small number of games may also be played on grass fields in the Northern area. Maps for finding all the grounds we use can be found in "The hockey fields that we use" section on the Links page.

The Club seeks to provide a framework for junior players to continue to play hockey with their peers until such time as they can commit to the senior competitions. In recent years, we have fielded a second Under 18 girls' team in the top division of the Sydney North Women's Hockey Association competition as well as a team in the U18 girls comp and we continue to be flexible in our approach to these older juniors.

The big change in 2017 is that we will for the first time ever have our own field. Training times are still tba, but in 2016 our junior girls and boys trained on Mondays at Ryde, near Macquarie Park railway station. Under 11s trained from 5pm- to 6pm and the others from 5pm to 6:30pm. They can train in normal athletic clothing: uniforms aren't needed until the competition starts in late March. Even for training, though, all juniors must wear a mouthguard and shinpads at all times on the field. This equipment can be obtained in numerous places, but we recommend going to our valued partner, Just Hockey, becasue they ptovide discounts for our juniors. Juniors' starter kits cost from $35. Just Hockey will also provide all the right fitting advice.

SUHC uniforms (Shirts, Shorts, Skorts, Socks) are available from Just Hockey at the Olympic pitch at Homebush. Visit www.justhockey.com.au to see their opening hours.

We are always looking for new players for all age groups. Bring a friend and have some sporting fun. Everyone says we have a great bunch of parents and players, and we have a genuine focus on sportsmanship and good fun. Players of all levels can fit in easily in all age groups (from the U9s to U11s, U13s, U15s and U17s).

We will have our online rego service available from the first week of March.

If you have any questions please contact Katie, the Juniors VP, by email - juniorhockey@suhc.asn.au
