First Club Night at the Roxbury

All hockey players are encouraged to come on down to the Roxbury on Friday 29th February from 7pm. It's the night before Rego. Nothing special - just a few drinks before a hard season of drinking. Nick Brown's the contact if you want more info.

Name the Series and Win!!

SUHC recently-announced its blockbuster series of interviews by our ace reporter, Chook, but our Media Marketing Department says "Chat to the Chook" is a crap name. They can't come up with anything better themselves, though. So now all members have the chance to Name the Series and win!

All you have to do is email your suggestion for the name of the series to webmaster@suhc.asn.au by 5pm on Friday 15th of February. The member submitting the name chosen by the panel as the new name for this blockbuster will win not only 6 bottles of SUHC Centenary Wine, but also the right to be interviewed by Chook in his second compelling series. Become the envy of your own team mates- and the focus of attention for lots of others. Priceless!

If entries are identical the first one in is the winner. Umpire's decision is final.

So start thinking and start emailing. Our operators are waiting at their machines. Good luck.

And the winner is... Ian Jessup from the Vets

Ace reporter Chook's new series will be called "Feedin' the Chook".  It's a unanimous decision from our Media Marketing Departement.

The winning name was submitted by the legendary Ian Jessup from the Vets team. No need for a profile now - you'll find out more about him in Chook's second penetrating series.

Exclusive New Series for 2008!!!!

Coming soon - "Chat to the Chook", SUHC's explosive, brand-new series!  Previously unpublished secrets about some of our top players are brought to light by Chook, our star reporter, in these sensational bare-all interviews.  Chook has recently been compared favourably to Sir Michael Parkinson* and you will see why. No hidden microphones, no hidden cameras - just the raw truth.  Forget the soft stuff like "Who is James Boag?" or "Who's AOV Woolf?" Chook starts with the penetrating "Who is Scrappy?"

Club Day a Success

Thanks to everyone who came to Club Day on Saturday 10th of May. The players all said the support was a huge boost. It's a pity we couldn't drag that single extra goal up for the 1sts, but the 2nds were in fine form, and the others played well, too, even if we would have liked a few more Big Ws.  We plan to have similar events whenever the draw gives us the opportunity - watch this space.

Also a huge thank you to the Club's fundraising committee (Bucko and crew) who put in the extra effort, created some fun for everyone and generated a quick $350 for the Foundation. Great effort!

Annual Pub Crawl this Saturday

Our Annual Pub Crawl is on this Saturday 31st May.  HUGE EVENT.  Everyone is invited (except the Juniors - sorry guys, but laws are laws).

Meet at the Roxbury at 6:30pm, and at 8:00pm it's on to the next pub.  T-Shirts ($15) are available at trainings and Games (Fri and Sat) this week.  Don't miss out - limited numbers only!

Drinks $5, T-Shirts $15, being with your mates - priceless!!

If you have any questions, contact Smoz.

Albury Easter Carnival - Men's Team Report

Three weeks in to our Sydney Uni experience, we packed our kit, sticks, alcohol and shells, and headed to the distant land of Albury. Our team comprised of three Aussies, eight Poms, a Dutchman, a Bermudan, a `poor man's Pom' (Irish!) and the embodiment of God himself, Scott Heapey. We visited all the major sights in Australia: The Big Sheep (Merino!?), The Dog on the Tuckerbox and The Submarine. Meanwhile Scott Laird showed us around the disappointment that is Canberra, home to the world's worst fountain!

Shortly after arrival at our hotel, we sat down to our first Mock Judiciary, where nicknames for the weekend were assigned, and rules for quaffage were enforced. Although these rules seemed too much for rookie `Easy,' who started the weekend as he meant to go on and donated his dinner to the bin.

After being suitably hydrated we moved on (minus our new Dutchman whose introduction to Australian nightlife was short lived) to the SS&A, where the party continued well, despite a certain member developing an unhealthy gambling habit! Unfortunately the new `phone battery' style ID card displayed by Andy (formerly known as Tom Cruise) was not accepted by the SS&A. Later that night, Scrappy and Ed invented an extreme version of noughts and crosses, involving a leg, marker pen, and a lighter!

Our opening match saw us up against arch rivals Glebe. This game needed all of us to be prepared, focussed and physically ready. However, five minutes before push back, our leader, Scrappy, was tucked up in bed. We rolled up as the hooter went, starting the game with just seven players and no goalkeeper, but awesome play by Stefan `Sherminator' Hese saw us take the lead. In classic Glebe fashion, they stole the victory 4-2.

We drew our second game 1-1 but were let down by blatant cheating by the weekend's timekeeper, JTB! After winning our third game 6-2, we headed back to the hotel for food and fancy dress. Out of the hotel walked 13 `Scott Heapeys' a `Ninja Turtle' and `Captain Planet' and set off for the official after party at `Roi' nightclub. A good night was had by most, although there were mixed experiences with the locals, some very friendly towards international visitors, but others less than impressed with turtles!

We awoke on Sunday to find a suicidal Pete, and a very cheerful Mussi. Arriving on time, we managed only a 1-1 draw, combined with a 2-0 loss. It was back to the hotel to challenge Glebe to a rematch, this time in the bar, unfortunately the result was unchanged. With promises of a `warehouse club' everyone started to trek across Albury. This turned out to be a water fight with fire hoses in a car park, and was unsurprisingly cut short by the police! On his return to the hotel Gerard entertained with a solo rendition of a homeland classic (video on demand).

Monday morning was another early start, and this time we started with just five outfield players on the pitch, two of which were, ironically, goalkeepers! Despite these minor setbacks we came out with a 3-1 victory to help claim the University Pennant.

We headed home tired but enlightened, with some questionable reversing on the hard-shoulder by the Aussies, to catch a glimpse of `Davey Road' and Easy's kangaroos. A special mention to Daniel `Dad' Field for having the best skills, despite being a goalie! Also to Joe `Tony Hawk' Broadbent for his skateboard-esque attire. Overall an awesome weekend, lots of ups and a few downs, and a good insight into the life of Scott `Hottie' Heapey. The trip was definitely a good preseason tour which brought the team together on and off the turf.

Bring on the season!

Poker Night

Our Poker Night will be held at the Roxbury on Saturday 26 July. Smoz and the Social Committee are collecting bookings now. Its a big night - why else are all the guys getting haircuts??

Remember the Trivia Night too on Saturday 23 August at the Roxbury.

Albury 2008 - The Ben Cousins Rehab Tour

Starting off as two new freshers to the Sydney Uni Hockey Club we decided the best way to launch ourselves into the club and meet everyone was to pack our bags for the Albury Easter trip along with 30 others - despite neither of us having met any of the group before! We had a weekend that exceeded all our expectations of the average hockey carnival and can now look back on some great memories and 30 great new friends.

The 7-hour trip flew by.  Really flew by, for some - one member of the tour managed to clock up a $300 speeding fine while for others maybe the few cases of Smirnoff they'd been working on since 6 am explains it!

From the very beginning we were included as part of the gang and couldn't have felt less like we had only met everyone on tour that morning!  We all took over the Albury Burvale Motel and kicked the weekend off to a flying start with a night out at Alburys finest establishment - the one and only SS&A club!! Tour t-shirts were worn (ripped, swapped and lost) throughout the night and weekend.  The second night saw the tour take on the ROI nightclub for a night of superhero-themed craziness with all the other players.  It was awesome to have a great night out with and get to know the hockey players from SUHC but also those from other teams representing clubs in and around Sydney and Melbourne.  Wherever we went

Hockey came in a close second to the social side of the tour - we are still all a little confused at how Sydney Uni managed to win the University Challenge with both the mixed teams - Sydney Uni `rug dodgers' and `salad dodgers' - struggling a little to take to the fields after our team bonding sessions the night before (at local pubs)! Getting up at 8 am to play hockey after a big night out was a challenge (most of) the tour group rose to each morning and it was always fun to be out on the field with the rest of the club players and playing against so many other teams in one of Australia's largest and oldest-running hockey carnivals.

Not only have we lived to tell the tale but the 30 tour players have grown to be a great group of friends who took us under their wing, showed us a great time at the Albury Carnival and have got us looking forward to doing it all again next year!  It's also thanks to the Albury weekend that the season for us now is shaping up to be extremely fun both on and off the field!!

We would give this trip a huge thumbs up to anyone old to the club but especially to newcomers like us.  Being part of the SUHC Albury tour promises so much more than a weekend of great hockey; it's an exciting, funny and memorable few days of getting to know a great group of people who will be your team mates, coaches and friends for the seasons to come!

Club Day: 2 August at P2

Following the huge success of our last Men's Club day, the SUHC Fundraising and Social Committees have announced the next instalment of Club Day Fixtures.

On Saturday the 2nd of August 2008 six of our seven Men's teams will be playing one after the other at Pitch 2 Homebush (P2). 5th and 6th Grade will be pushing to smash uni(?) rivals UNSW, whilst 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th grades will be slugging it out against Moorebank. Full details are on the Hockey Club Day Flyer.

I played during our last Club Day, and it was an amazing feeling for everyone in the team to have a crowd of around 100 SUHC supporters backing every move we made and punishing any error the opposition made. You cannot believe how good it is to hear a crowd roaring at our games, or how much it really does lift the players.

Please join the Club's growing number of fans and come and support SUHC our way: fair, supportive and LOUD - just the way it should be.

Bring the noise and enjoy your game!

Club Fitness

Club Fitness has started.  The group meets at the Square next to Sydney Uni Arena at 7pm each Thursday and trains for approx 1 hour. Sessions are run by Staff Sergeant Rob Verdon (pictured on right - far tougher than that Private Remo from last year!).

The sessions provide comprehensive pre-season strength, endurance and core training to prepare for another champion season for Sydney Uni.  These fitness sessions are open for the men's and women's teams.   SSRV looks forward to seeing you all there each Thursday.

Nominate the Highest Achievers of 2008

Presentation Night on 11 October means it's awards time again. Forget the Biggest Losers - this is all about finding the people who gave their all during the year, and not just a couple of kilos. Each year SUHC presents a number of prestigious awards to recognise the achievements of players from across the Club. The awards include:

Rising Star
Coach of the Year
Social person of the year (female)
Social person of the year (male)
Best defender of the year (female)
Best defender of the year (male)
Most valuable player of the year (female)
Most valuable player of the year (male)
Clubperson of the year

You - the players and friends - know better than anyone else who ought to be considered for these awards. If you think someone deserves to be considered you need to nominate them now.  Its easy:  just email the Club secretary Melanie Platt (melsp@yahoo.com) and tell her the name of the person, the team they played for, the awards(s) you are nominating them for and a brief outline of why they should win the award(s).

Nominations are due by Friday the 19th of September.

There is no rule about how much info you need to supply or the format of the info. Just make sure you send Mel enough info for the Committee to have all the facts they need to make a fair decision.

Official Weigh-In on 14 August

The Biggest Losers from Men's 2nd Grade are getting serious. Their official weigh-in has been set for Thursday 14 August at Kyeemagh, and they are bulking up in advance of the big day. Cookie says he has a fat chance of winning this one!

The RTA had offered a mobile checking unit for the occasion. This was declined because of safety concerns if its springs were stressed.

Everyone is urged to get behind these guys (you won't be seen) and support this innovative way to raise funds for the Foundation.

Tickets from Thicketek. Sponsored by beer. Spoken by G. Heasbig on behalf of the Australian Laboured Breathing party.

Last of the Summer Wine - McWilliams at just $7.50 a bottle!

The last of the SUHC Centenary Wine (McWilliams Chardonnay) is for sale at just $90 a case for students players and $100 a case for others. That is $7.50 a bottle for student players and it comes with free delivery in Sydney. It is a great wine and an even greater cause.

Minimum order one case. Order form is here. Orders can also be emailed to webmaster@suhc.asn.au . NB there is no Shiraz left.

2009 New Player's Night is Saturday 4 April

New Player's Night is at Cooper's Hotel on Saturday 4 April. See the invitation here.

Poker Night Update

Going head to head with the Bledisloe Cup match a few suburbs away made it a tough choice for many regulars, but the Poker Night on the 26th of July was still a great success for those die-hard revellers, gamblers and drifters who made it. The National Poker League also said it was a great night and they would be happy to do it again with us at any time. Many thanks to Gash and Smoz for all their efforts.

The main winner on the night was Gash (Andy Cowan). This was a great result for everyone because he immediately realised he was in a no-win situation if he kept the prizes - a World Series of Poker set, a bottle of wine, a bottle of vodka, DVD of James Bond Casino Royale and poker merchandise supplied by the NPL - so he them with the other players on the final table. Dan Field came 2nd (proving that Pokemon cards are good training for something) and Katie Fenwicke 3rd (another misspent childhood). Their prizes were more wine and vodka, more merchandise, box set of DVDs etc.

Everyone who made it had a good time, so next time round we encourage everyone to be part of it. Even with the reduced crowd it was still a good night for the highly social SUHC.

Trivia night on 23 August

This Saturday, August 23rd is our Trivia/Olympics Night. Come down to the Roxbury in Glebe for a truly great night. SUHC will be hosting a silent auction, trivia and pre-game build up prior to the Men's Olympic Gold Medal Match in Beijing. The Burras are out to retain their gold medal, so come and watch some more hockey magic being created while you win some things for yourself.

We have a host of wonderful prizes, so you wouldn't want to miss out.  Come dressed as the best fanatic and you could also win!!  Friends and family most welcome. As Confucius says, "You must be in it to win it!"  Let's get behind the Club and Kookaburras!

See Smoz or Andy Andy Elton or anyone on the Social Committe for details.

2008 Fundraising Campaign

2nd grade men's

It has come to our (as well as most of the club's) attention that Mens 2nd grade Sydney Uni is carrying (as nicely put) several CAKE EATERS, FAT BOYS and JELLY BELLIES.

The candidates:

       - Ben "Captain of the fat boys Remington" Chiarella

       - Chris "Moylo, I have my methods to lose weight (illegal or not)" Moylan

       - Jason "Tugga, I am too old for this but my wife wants me to" Faulks

       - Mick "I want to look good naked" Duck

       - Bradley "If I shave my eyebrows there is 15 kegs already" Cooke

       - Luke "perhaps if I do this I will get more ladies" Nuttal

What has been proposed is an 8 week challenge to lose as much weight as possible to raise money for the hockey turf.

The logistics:

People will/can sponsor the group (or an individual) per Kg they lose over the 8 week period. Therefore $10 per kg (we lose 10kgs) $100 donation to the turf. We will be sending out forms etc and putting things on line over the coming few months for this to be ready to go come 8 weeks prior to presso!!

There will be a offical weigh in 8 weeks before presentation night (plus photos and official starting weight) and then we have 8 weeks to lose as much weight as possible for a official (briefs only, for you LADIES) weigh in at presso (Looking like October Saturday 11th!!) on the main stage and a tally of how much money this little experiment can raise for the CLUBS HOCKEY TURF

This would serve as 2 useful opportunities:

            - we could raise a massive amount for the turf.

            - I hopefully won't be a fatty anymore!!

Sponsorship forms will be sent out a part of the SU website will be set up for this fund raising opportunity. Get on board; support us fatties from going to FLAB to FAB in 8 weeks and help purchase a hockey turf... It's a definite WIN - WIN!!!

King of the Fatties, Ben "Remington" Chiarella, signing off!!

Trivia Hint: LEMO (le'mo) n. A Japanese wrestler too overweight to participate in a first grade sumo tournament.

The Camel Cup: Team of the Year in 2008

As you know our Club is on a mission. It is - in one word - TURF!

In the past the Camel Cup has been awarded to the team which has made the highest contribution to the social values of the Club. This year the award has taken a new form. The Cup will be awarded to that team which does the most to embody the spirit of the Club by assisting the Hockey Foundation by raising funds to support hockey at SU. Funds can be raised in whatever form you wish - carwashes/ BBQs/ ebay/ sponsorships etc. The Executive will also take into account each team's creativeness and approach to promoting the club or improving club attitude in these efforts.

So far there have been a few crafty attempts to raise money, from the Biggest Losers to massive chocolate sales and even $$ for kisses on pub crawl.

The closing time for submitting your teams fundraising efforts is exactly one week before Presentation night ( 11th of Oct).

So get on to it, raise those last few dollars and give your team its chance to win the prestigious Camel Cup.

Good luck!

Club day on 13 June at Olympic

The Men's teams have a Club Day on 13 June at Olympic. Everyone is playing at Homebush that day except 5ths, who play at Pennant Hills at 12:30pm. See the brochure here

Sydney Olympic Park is a fully licensed venue. BYO is NOT allowed. SUHC has been warned by SHA and SWHL because of breaches of this rule by our supporters in the past, and neither we nor they will tolerate further incidents. There are severe consequences for the club and supporters for any breaches, so please respect this rule. Alcoholic beverages can be purchased at the canteen or the Waratah Room Bar.

Pub Crawl 2009: Newtown, are you ready?

Congratulations to Annabelle McGee (5th Grade), the winner of the slogan competition and new SUHC Social Hero! Her winning entry is now plastered over the front of your new T-shirt. With a few cheeky additions on the back it will ensure you look and play the part out and about in Newtown. Thank you to everyone who participated in the competition. We had a tough choice as there were some great entries.

Club day on 18 April at Cintra

Preso Night on 24th October for Men's, Women's and Vets Players

As the season is coming to end it can only mean one thing socially...Preso Night.

Please save the date: Saturday October 24, 2009. This is a brilliant evening when SUHC comes together as a club to reflect upon on the season that has been, celebrate out teams and athletes achievements and enjoy each other's company once again.

Arrangements for the evening will be released shortly, but for now lock the date in and stay tuned for more information. In the meantime, keep winning so we have plenty to celebrate about.

Juniors will have their Presentation Day at 4pm on 20th September at Primrose Park.

25 July is Apres Ski at Coopers
Presentation Night 2008

Our 2008 Presentation Night was held on Saturday 11 October.  There are some photos in the Gallery to prove it (for those whose memories were rendered less than perfect). Another great night, with the Juniors, Seniors and Vets all well represented. The highlights of the night were Andy Andy Elton claiming the Clubperson of the Year trophy, and Brett Radcliffe becoming the Club's third 500 game medallist. After 500 games all that Brett wants, he says,  is to play just one game on his own home turf. The other highlight was seeing Remo genuinely touched that an award had been named after him and Sam Gow for their efforts in creating the club's juniors.

The Camel Cup was not awarded on the night because the donations from the teams are still being tabulated. There have been some spectacular effirts. The three teams that are serious contenders for their efforts are Womens 7th grade (over $1000 - mainly Cash for Pash, as far as we can work out), Mens 2nd grade (The Biggest Losers - they lost 37.05kg, and if they can sell that at prime cut rates rather than lard rates they could also be in the $1,000s) and the Under 11s, who have converted Baker's Delight Vegemite scrolls into a stunning $2,500.

Thanks to Khevyn for some unusually short speeches, and to Smoz and Gash for being MCs as well as the organisers. Also thanks to the people who turned up at the last minute to make it a greta evening - but please remeber to pay Smoz so your clubmates fees don't have to subsidise your dinner as well as their own hockey.

SUHC and MUHC win 1 each in 99 year Rematch in 2008

SUHC is one of Auistralia's oldest hockey clubs, and our longest-standing opponent is Melbourne University. SUHC played a number of teams in those early years, but Melbourne University is the only one that has stood the test of time and still exists as a hockey club.  Our first inter-varsity game was against MU in 1909, and nigh on a hundred years of competition between the two clubs is an extraordinary achievement. What makes it even better is that the MU players are very similar to us, and the small geographic dislocation is just an interesting way of dividing us up.  Off the field its a party where everyone gets on brilliantly...but on the field we are fierce competitors: a real battle between brothers, of Olympian or even Lobseyian dimensions.

So every year, when a cohort of SU players put on the blue and gold to play at the Australian University Games, the freshers are fired by the same passion and inter-varsity rivalry that has inspired great games for 99 years. Over that time we have taken on MU and every other hockey-playing university in the country and we have had more than our fair share of victories. Those other universities can only dream, though,  of a history of on-field battle and off-field celebrations like the one we share with MU.

SUHC and MUHC both celebrated centenaries in 2007, and our next milestone is the keenly anticipated Centenary of Inter-Varsity Hockey Match between MUHC and SUHC in Sydney in 2009. MUHC won in 1909, and even though SUHC won in 1910, we'd like to think its our turn to win the big one(s) next year too.

As a lead up to the Centenary match we organised two special 99 year games for the Mens and Womens teams as an adjunct to the Australian University Games that are currently on in Melbourne.  The games were played at MU on Sunday 28 Sptember. For the history books, SUHC was represented by:

Again for the history books, SU won the Men's match 5-4, while in the Women's game we had a narrow 5-2 loss (goals to Amanda Hese and Bec Reardon). The proposed barbeque was transformed into a much nore entertaining pub session. Watch us do better on every front in 2009.

Many of the SU players are continuing on at the Australian University Games, and hoping to match or exceed their successes from last year. Good luck to the teams and to the individual players when it comes to Australian rep selection time.

Club day for Men's teams on 24 April
Pub Crawl is on Saturday 29 May: Save the date!

The most wonderful time of the year is approaching, folks! One of the biggest social nights of the year is near and you definitely don't want to miss out! That's right, SUHC's annual pub crawl is coming.

Its time to terrorise the streets of Newtown in matching T-shirts with our own clever slogan.  Plan your calendar and prepare for one MASSIVE night out before putting your head down and hitting the books for Stuvac.  Best of all. none of the men's teams have the late game so no-one has to play catch up this year.

Once again, we'll be running a contest to see whose words of wisdom will live forever on marker stained t-shirts.  Send your ideas for slogans to carlychurch@gmail.com by May 3rd. The winner will get their pub crawl T-shirt for free and heaps of additional prizes (or maybe not) so start thinking.

Details about the route and T-shirt costs will be posted soon. Watch this space (or join the SUHC facebook group if you haven't already). In the meantime start thinking of T-shirt slogans.
