SUHC Juniors keep the Sport Going

Last weekend our 1st grade Mens and Women's teams had at least eight current or ex Juniors listed to play in them. That is a record for us., and represents a huge success for our hard-working Junior VP and all her team. It is especially heartening to see when one considers that a decade ago, when SUHC first took over the former North Sydney Juniors, we had barely 20 Juniors all up.

The juniors who stepped up to the mark (or would have, bar injuries) over the weekend to play 1st grade for the Club included Mathilda Carmichael, Kate Johnston, Alistair Johnston (no relation), Cam Rowland, Rhiannon Russell, Emma Scriven, Cara Simpson and Fiona Tout.

Our junior program is relatively young compared to many clubs. That means we are not yet able to replicate the junior strength of some of the best of our peers, but we are getting there. A good sign is the numbers of teams we have in outdoor as well as indoor, and for girls as well as boys.  Our history of steady growth in numbers is amazing given our lack of a home base.

Many thanks to all those who have contributed to the organisation, training, management and umpiring of our Juniors over the years. Hockey in Sydney is clearly the better for it!

North Area website
North Area Junior Hockey Association has developed its own website, and it is now up and running. It has the draw, results and the ladder for all the North Area competitions. Click here to access the North Area website.
Ex Junior makes First Grade Debut

Former SUHC Junior Alistair Johnston made his first grade debut on Saturday 10 July in our thrilling 3-3 draw with Ryde at Olympic.  Alistair joins a small but growing list of former juniors who have started in SUHC's most junior team - the Under 11Bs  - and progressed all the way to First Grade for either Men or Women.  It doesn't get better than that for a club that is focused on developing new players. There are now over 20 current and former juniors playing in our senior teams.

Alistair has played almost 200 games for SUHC. He started at 9 in the Under 11Bs in 2003, with coach Ben Chiarella.  Ben played with Alistair in 2nd grade on Saturday, along with Cameron Rowland, who was also in the 2003 Under 11Bs, and who debuted in 1st grade in 2009. The Under 11s' first game in 2003 was a 0-12 loss to Ryde, and two of the Ryde players from 2003 were also in Ryde's 1st grade team on Saturday... its a small community!

Congratulations to Alistair, and all those who have coached and played with him over the years in SUHC's juniors... particularly Ben and Cameron.

Tim Brand in PSSA
Congratulations to Tim Brand on his selection in the NSW PSSA team for 2010. The selection followed the recent HNSW Half State Championships for the Under 13s, where the SYdney 1 team (which included Tim, Chris Culey and Kemba Jessup from SU) won Division 1. The Sydney 2 team won Division 2, with Sydney 3 as the runners-up there.  Congratulations to all involved
Rowing Coach
Congratulations to Jacqui Morbey, who won the recent Head of The River Regatta as a member of the Queenwood 1st VIII.  Jacqui played in our U15s last year, and also coaches the Under 11s. Great effort, Jacqui.
Sydney Uni Juniors in 2010

The junior division of Sydney University Hockey Club was formed in 2001 when the North Sydney Juniors became part of the Sydney University Hockey Club.

Each year, SUHCJ enters teams in the U11, U13 and U15 age groups in the North Area competition, which is part of Sydney Junior Hockey Association.  These teams are all mixed teams.  In 2010, we will also field a team in the Sydney-wide Under 15 Metro competition (arguably Australia's best junior hockey competition) and at least one Under 18 girls team.  Our U17 boys will play in the SHA U17 comp and/or play in the men's grade teams.

We also enter a large number of teams in various Indoor Hockey competitions in Spring and Summer.

Our teams all performed well in 2009 with many of them making the semis and two teams winning their Grand Final matches.

The North Area competition games are on Friday evenings from 6.30pm or on Saturday mornings from 8.30am.  Most teams have an even mixture of Friday night and Saturday morning games.  The games are played at all the turf fields in the North Area - Ryde, Cintra (Concord), Pennant Hills and Gordon - with a small number also played on grass fields in the Nothern area. Maps for finding all the grounds we use can be found in Links.

The Club seeks to provide a framework for junior players to continue to play hockey with their peers until such time as they can commit to the senior competitions.  In recnet years, we have fielded a second Under 18 girls' teams in the top division of the Sydney North Women's Hockey Association competition as well as a team in the U18 girls comp and we continue to be felxible in our apporcah to these older juniors.  The Club's Under 17 boys have played in the men's comp and in 2010 will be playing in combined U17 teams.

For more information, please read the Junior Club Information booklet or the 2010 newsletters below.  For more details about registration, please email juniorhockey@suhc.asn.au.

Juniors supporting Senior Ranks

A highlight of the 2008 competition start has been to see so many current and former SUHC juniors who are playing in the Mens and Womens senior ranks.

There are already more than 15 current and former juniors scattered through all grades of the Mens and Womens teams. These juniors have been training with the senior squads for manyweeks, and are now having their first games for 2008 in the senior competition. .

Most noticeable was the Mens Third Grade side on Saturday 29th of March, where five of the team were products of SUHC's own junior club.

Draw, Results and Points Tables
The draw, results of each round and the cumulative points table for the Juniors can be found by clicking on the North Area Junior Hockey Association website.  The U15A/Metro results and other information is a bit of a mystery as SJHA haven't updated their websuite since 2009...
