Information for New Players

Sydney University Hockey Club  always welcomes new players.  We are one of Sydney's largest hockey clubs with teams in the Men's, Women's, Veterans and Juniors competitions.

Our outdoor hockey season is from late February or March through to September, and then we have indoor teams playing in October to December.

In 2010, we expect to have eight Men's teams and Women's teams.  We will also have four Veterans teams (three Men's teams and one Women's team) and at least five Junior teams (ages Under 11, Under 13 and Under 15 mixed, an Under 18 Girls team and our boys participating in a Combined clubs 17 Boys team).

Trials for all teams are usually in February or March, but please contact us at any time if you wish to play as we may have vacancies.

For many years we have had a number of offshore students and others playing in our teams, and we welcome them again this year.

We do not have a home ground for this year (but watch this space!) so training venues vary. Details for 2010 are set out on the Mens and Womens pages. The Juniors train at Ryde late on Monday afternoons. The Veterans are beyond training...

You should email the following people if you want to find out more about playing for us:

Men's teams: Rob Verdon at  menshockey@suhc.asn.au

Women's teams: Harriet Caterson at womenshockey@suhc.asn.au

Juniors: Anne Simmons at juniorhockey@suhc.asn.au

Veterans: Malcolm "Camel" Newman at veterans@suhc.asn.au

Hope we see you soon!

Uniforms Available at Just Hockey at Homebush

Club uniforms can now be purchased at Just Hockey at Homebush.  We have our own display!

The new arrangement is a huge benefit for the Club. "We have always had kit for sale at Rego Day" said Club Captain Andy Andy Elton "But after Rego Day every request for new gear has meant our Vice Presidents, team captains or Assistants have had to collect the gear, travel somewhere, collect the money and then bank it. It has been a huge amount of work for these people.  I can only admire them for doing this for the players. They have better things to do with their time, though, and let's face it - some of them aren't cut out for retailing!"

"The new arrangement keeps our Club costs down" added Andy. "With so many people involved it has been impossible for the Club to maintain an exact control of our stock, and any mistakes meant we were out of pocket.  We have professionals doing it now. Better still, the gear is now available 7 days a week at Homebush, where many teams play. The VPs can spend their time managing the competitions rather than being sales assistants, and the Club has less risk."

"Many thanks to Anne Simmons for us and to Liz from Just Hockey's head office in Melbourne for negotiating this arrangement. It has been a huge effort, because it is a unique commercial arrangement. Our members love it, and it seems to be a very fair arrangement for Just Hockey too."

Prices for our kit remain the same: Socks $10, Junior shirts $25, Senior shirts $35 and Shorts $30. Due to a "Skort War" between various manufacturers, skorts without the club logo may be cheaper over time.

Just Hockey has been a strong sponsor of the Club for many years, so get out there for whatever you need.  Be nice to Sharon and Aaron (from Mackay) -  they have been great supporters of the Club.

Even More SU players in NSW Vets Teams

Our correspondant in Darwin reports that the number of former SU players in the NSW Veterans teams is even higher than first reported.  Andrew Terrey (Over 50's) and David Prior (Over 55s) are also former SU players from the 1970s who are still State level (at least) athletes. That brings us to having 15 players in the NSW State teams. We also have the unique distinction of having two former first grade coaches in the top Over 50s side.
